NEWARK, DELAWARE (6/13/2015) A young girl drowned after falling into a retention pond at Newark Country Club this evening, authorities said.

The 4-year-old  had wandered away from a private party at the George Wilson Community Center on New London Road about 6:40 p.m., said Lt. Bill Hargrove of Newark police.

Police, firefighters and people from the party searched the pond for the girl, and she was located by two firefighters from Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company, said Sgt. Michael A. McColley of New Castle County paramedics.

The firefighters and paramedics performed CPR  and she was taken by Aetna ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, where she was later pronounced dead, McColley said.
