The blaze was reported about 6 a.m. in the 2900 block of Squirrel Drive, near the U.S. 40 and Route 72 intersection.

Flames had engulfed the three-story building by the time Christiana Fire Company arrived, said Michael Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

He said the building had been occupied but the number of displaced residents was unknown. No injuries were reported.

Teresa C. Iocco of Bear was arrested by deputy fire marshals and charged with first-degree arson and three counts of reckless endangering. All charges are felonies.

In all, 24 apartments were damaged, with 12 of those not able to be re-occupied, Chionchio said.

Management of the complex is working to relocate the displaced residents. The American Red Cross also is assisting with recovery efforts.

Investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started, Chionchio said.
