WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (3/28/2018) A 59-year-old grandmother has died from injuries suffered in a Wilmington house fire on Sunday, becoming the second fatality from the blaze, authorities said today.
The fire was reported at 7:14 p.m. at 405 W. 23rd St., with heavy flames on the first and second floors.
Three people were trapped on the second floor and rescued by firefighters.
Fay Hyland was one of those, and she was taken first to Christiana Hospital in Stanton and then to Chester-Crozer Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania, where she later died of her injuries.
Maurice Williams, 11 months old, died the night of the fire after being taken to Nemours/A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Rockland.
Isaac Williams, 3 weeks old, was taken first to Nemours and then transferred to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. He was in critical but stable condition.
A fourth member of the family, 17-year-old Nashon Hyland, jumped from a second-floor window before firefighters arrived. He remains at Nemours in stable condition.
Authorities said he was able to escape due to a closed bedroom door keeping the flames away.
The fire is under investigation by the Wilmington Fire Marshal’s office with assistance from the Delaware state Fire Marshal’s Office.
Investigators said there were believed to be no working smoke detectors in the home.
The Wilmington Fire Department offers free smoke detectors and free installation to any resident that owns a home in the city. The Smoke Alarm Hotline is 302-571-4361 or visit www.wilmingtonde.gov/government/public-safety/wilmington-fire-department.
