BRANDYWINE HUNDRED, DELAWARE (3/10/2018) A 49-year-old Pennsylvania man died in a bizarre wrong-way crash on Naamans Road (Route 92), the Delaware State Police said today.
The crash was reported at 8:50 p.m. Friday at the Society Drive intersection, west of Interstate 95.
Police said the man killed was driving a 2001 Mercedes M-class SUV westbound when it struck the rear of a 2014 Honda Accord stopped for a red light in the right lane.
“After this initial collision the operator of the Mercedes exited his vehicle and appeared agitated, mumbled incoherently and then re-entered his vehicle. He then accelerated his vehicle to turn around and fled the crash scene traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes,” Sgt. Richard Bratz said.
He said the Mercedes then drove through the grass median and struck a road sign, then continued east in the left lane of westbound Naamans Road.
A 2001 Ford F-350 pickup truck, driven by a 17-year-old boy of Pennsylvania, was traveling west on Naamans Road in the left lane toward Society Drive. The Mercedes entered into the path of the F-350 and the two vehicles collided head-on, Bratz said.
The driver of the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not release his name pending notification of next of kin. He wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the Honda and his passenger refused medical treatment at the scene. Both were wearing seat belts, Bratz said.
The driver of the F-350 and a front seat passenger were treated at Christiana Hospital in Stanton for injuries police described as not life-threatening. A rear middle-seat passenger was treated at Nemours/A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Rockland, with injuries police also said were not life-threatening. Bratz said the passengers were not wearing seat belts.
He said speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
