40-year-old man struck, killed by Newark police car is identified

NEWARK, DELAWARE (3/7/2018) Delaware State Police have released the name of a 40-year-old man who was struck and killed by a Newark police car.

The fatal crash was reported at 9:38 p.m. Friday on East Chestnut Hill Road (Route 4) near the entrance to the Robscott Manor development, along the Newark city line.

State police said the Newark officer, in a marked patrol car, was eastbound in the left lane when the pedestrian, identified as Robert George of Newark, entered the path of travel and was struck by the front of the Chevrolet Caprice. George struck the windshield and came to rest in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer was responding to a non-emergency call at the time and wasn’t using emergency lights or siren, state police said.

George was wearing dark clothing, wasn’t carrying a light nor wearing reflective material, state police said. He wasn’t crossing in a crosswalk.

State police said there was no street lighting in the area.

The officer driving the Caprice, who wasn’t identified by state police, was wearing a seat belt and wasn’t injured.

The road was closed about two hours as police investigated.

State police are continuing their investigation and asked anyone with information to call Cpl. J. Breen at 302-365-8486.
