STANTON, DELAWARE (12/24/2017) A suspect in a Wilmington carjacking faces charges after two people from New Jersey were killed in a head-on crash involving the stolen car and another vehicle, Delaware State Police said.
The fatal crash happened about 4:53 p.m. Saturday on Delaware Park Boulevard, the entrance road to the Delaware Park casino and racetrack, near Ogletown-Stanton Road (Route 4).
Police said the driver of the stolen car, a 2015 Nissan Altima, entered the boulevard at high speed and passed several vehicles, crossing the double yellow line, before colliding head-on with a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis.
The driver of the Mercury, a 77-year-old man of Mantua, New Jersey, was pronounced dead at the scene. A front-seat passenger in the car, a 92-year-old woman also of Mantua, died later at Christiana Hospital. Police withheld their names pending notification of next of kin.
Police identified the driver of the Nissan as Stephen R. Goodman, 33, of Wilmington. He was admitted to Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.
He faces two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, receiving stolen property, driving on the wrong side of the road, driving at unreasonable speed and driving while suspended. Police said those charges as well as a second-degree carjacking charge from Wilmington will be processed when Goodman’s medical condition improves.
Police asked anyone with information on the crash to call Sgt. D. Alexander at 302-365-8484.
