The pedestrian incident at Delaware Park Drive was reported at 9:37 p.m.

Police said Edward D. Shank, 28, of Newark, was attempting to cross the westbound lanes from south to north and stepped into the path of a 2014 Dodge Charger in the right lane.

He was struck by the right front of the car and vaulted over the roof, landing in the roadway.

Shank was treated by New Castle County paramedics and taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, Matthew S. Myers, 27, of Wilmington, brought the car to a stop about 500 feet west of the intersection. Police said he was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Myers was charged with third-offense driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while suspended or revoked, no proof of motor vehicle insurance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said he had a green traffic light and no further charges are expected.

Myers was being held at Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington in lieu of $7,000 cash bail.
