Dirt bike rider, 21, dies after Wilmington firetruck crash

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (8/2/2016) A 21-year-old dirt bike rider who collided with a Wilmington firetruck has died of his injuries, city police announced Monday.

The crash happened about 1:20 p.m. Saturday at West Fourth Street and North Van Buren streets.

The firetruck was responding to a fire call with emergency lights and siren activated, police said.

The dirt bike was northbound on Van Buren and failed to stop for a red traffic signal and struck the firetruck, which was eastbound on Fourth.

He was treated at the scene by Wilmington Fire Department personnel and New Castle County paramedics, then taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton.

There were no injuries on the firetruck, Ladder Truck No. 2 out of Engine Company 6 at Third and North Union streets.

The name of the dirt bike rider is being withheld by police pending notification of next of kin.
