2 seriously hurt in Carr Road crash

PENNY HILL, DELAWARE (3/16/2016) Two people were seriously injured late Tuesday night in a crash on Carr Road near Washington Street Extension, authorities said.

The single-vehicle accident happened about 10 p.m.

The 2007 BMW 530XI, driven by a 32-year-old man, was southbound on Carr Road at high speed when it ran off the edge of the roadway approaching a slight left curve, said Cpl. Tracey Duffy of New Castle County police.

The car continued along a ditch and then hit a tree, causing the entire passenger side to separate, she said.

The driver and a 27-year-old man who was a passenger were both taken by ambulances to Christiana Hospital in Stanton.

One had been trapped in the wreckage and both complained of body-wide injuries, and they were taken to the hospital in serious condition, said Cpl. David J. McKinney Jr. of New Castle County paramedics.

Duffy later said the driver’s injuries were minor and the passenger had undergone surgery for injuries that were not life-threatening.

She said investigators believe speed and alcohol are contributing factors in the crash.
