Student charged with having gun, marijuana at Newark High School

NEWARK, DELAWARE (2/17/2016) A Newark High School student was arrested on gun and drug charges after a teacher smelled marijuana in a classroom, city police said.

The incident happened about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The school resource officer was called and had the 16-year-old student gather his belongings and go to the office. Police said a small amount of marijuana and a loaded handgun were found in the boy’s backpack.

The gun, a loaded Ruger .380 caliber, had been hidden inside a sneaker, Lt. Bill Hargrove said.

The boy, a Wilmington resident, was charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited juvenile, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a weapon in a safe school zone, possession or consumption of marijuana under age 18 and possession of drug paraphernalia.
