3 hurt in Route 273 crash; SUV bursts into flames

NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (1/21/2015) Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash this morning west of New Castle, with an SUV bursting into flames, according to reports from the scene.

The accident happened about 5:40 a.m. on Christiana Road (Route 273) at Prangs Lane.

The three injured were taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton.

The 16-year-old girl who was driving the SUV, a Chevrolet Blazer, was evaluated on the scene for a possible back injury before being taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, said Sgt. Abigail Haas of New Castle County paramedics.

A 48-year-old woman driving the car was treated by paramedics for scrapes, a chest injury and possible internal injuries before being taken to the hospital in serious condition, Haas said.

A woman believed to be in her 20s, who was a passenger in the car, was treated for a possible back injury and then taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Christiana and Wilmington Manor fire companies responded as well as DelDOT crews.

Delaware State Police are investigating the crash.

The intersection was closed for more than an hour as Delaware State Police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
