SMYRNA, DELAWARE (11/24/2015) A 51-year-old Smyrna man was arrested in connection with a domestic assault at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in Dover, and police say his home was searched in connection with a homicide investigation and a dog was killed. Weapons also were seized from a vehicle.
Mark R. Reedy, of 421 Kates Way in Smryna, surrendered to Delaware State Police on Monday after failing to appear for a preliminary hearing relating to the domestic incident on Nov. 11. He was released on $3,000 unsecured bond pending a preliminary hearing in Kent County Superior Court.
State police said Reedy was a patient at the hospital on Nov. 11 when he physically assaulted his 52-year-old girlfriend during an argument when she was visiting him. Dover police charged him with strangulation and terroristic threatening the next day after his release from the hospital and he was then released on unsecured bond.
On Thursday, Smyrna police and state homicide detectives attempted to serve a Family Court order on Reedy at his home calling for him to surrender his weapons but were unable to do so, state police said. A vehicle seen leaving the home, however, was stopped and several weapons seized from it.
State police said in a news release they attempted to search the home Friday, but “a dog was encountered and less than lethal force was used in attempt to subdue the animal, but was unsuccessful. The animal became aggressive and lethal force was used as a necessary measure for the safety of the officers.”
Smyrna police said they were not involved in the search on Friday nor in the killing of the dog.
A video (shown above) posted on YouTube purported to show the state police entering the home but did not show the killing of the dog.
Reedy posted the video on his Facebook page along with one of his own comments, as well as graphic still images of the scene and comments including, “Killed while he was hiding behind the table.”
Police released no details on the homicide investigation, but said it is ongoing and more information will be released when available.
