NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (11/24/2015) U.S. Sen. Tom Carper led other officials this morning at an event promoting local shopping with the ‘Byways Bucks’ program.

The coupon voucher program offers special dining, shopping and admissions deals along Delaware’s “Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway.”

The vouchers also are now redeemable from mobile devises.

A news conference was held on the steps of the First State National Historic Park’s New Castle Courthouse Museum, followed by a walking tour of participating businesses in old New Castle.

“Travelers can follow the ‘Tubman Byway’s’ route to re-trace Harriet Tubman’s perilous Civil-War-era journey through the First State, ferrying fugitive slaves to freedom in the North, said John Fleming, Delaware district director for the Small Business Administration. “And, now, thanks to the ‘Byway Bucks’ program, the Tubman Byway maps out a whole new journey along its route – a discounted shopping, dining and leisure trail cutting through the heart of some of Delaware’s most character-filled towns. What better time to experience the ‘Tubman Byway’ – taking advantage of discounts at the shopping and dining outlets that it offers – than the holiday season?”
