WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (10/23/2015) An 18-year-old man was arrested after he struck a marked New Castle County patrol car with an all-terrain vehicle and attempted to flee, police said this morning.
The incident happened Thursday in the area of the Canby Park Shopping Center on Maryland Avenue west of Wilmington.
A man later identified as Joshua Torres, 18, of the 200 block of Harrison St. in Wilmington, was seen driving recklessly through the parking lot, Cpl. Tracey Duffy said.
Officer First Class R. Blackson found Torres attempting to fix the ATV, Duffy said, and as he approached, Torres attempted to start the ATV and it lunged forward and became wedged under the front bumper of the patrol car.
Torres attempted to free the ATV but was unsuccessful and fled on foot, Duffy said. Blackson captured Torres on Maryland Avenue.
Damage to the patrol car was minor, Duffy said. The ATV was towed from the scene.
Torres was charged with resisting arrest, operating an off-highway vehicle without a helmet, operating an off-highway vehicle on private property, possession of an altered/defaced VIN number on an off-highway vehicle and leaving the scene of a property collision accident. He was released on an unsecured bond and issued a no contact order with the shopping center.
