NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (10/20/2015) A man struck by a car on U.S. 40 west of New Castle late Monday has died of his injuries, Delaware State Police said this morning.

The pedestrian killed was identified as Michael A. Thomas Jr., 26, of Wilmington.

He was attempting to walk north across the westbound lanes of U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway) just east of Wilton Boulevard about 8:45 p.m. when he was struck by the front of a 2004 Chevrolet Impala, police said.

The impact caused Thomas to be thrown onto the hood, windshield and roof of the car, and then onto the ground as the vehicle came to a stop. He was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, where he was pronounced dead.

Alcohol use on the part of Thomas is being considered a factor in the crash, police said.

The driver of the Impala, identified as Joshua Wheatley, 23, of Newark, was not injured. Police said he was wearing a seat belt.

Police said they are still investigating but no charges are expected to be filed.

U.S. 40 was closed in the area about two hours as police investigated and the area cleared.
