SLAUGHTER BEACH, DELAWARE (10/7/2015) The DuPont Nature Center at Mispillion Harbor Reserve has closed for the winter, officials announced Tuesday.
The center at 2992 Lighthouse Road near Slaughter Beach offers a variety of interactive exhibits, school tours and educational programs and will reopen April 1. In the spring, its location offers wildlife watchers a front-row seat for migrating shorebirds, including the red knot, that depend on horseshoe crab eggs to help fuel their 9,000-mile journey.
The center closes for the winter months when there is less public use and to conserve limited Sport Fish Restoration Funds which help it operate.
The center is owned and operated by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of fish and Wildlife.
