Major road work, delays set for I-95, U.S. 202

NEWARK, DELAWARE (9/29/2015) Several highway projects are likely to cause major delays for traffic on Interstate 95 in Delaware in the coming weeks, including northbound overnight lane closures in the Newark and Christiana areas and full closure of U.S. 202 (Concord Pike) at I-95 near Wilmington for days.

The Delaware Department of Transportation announced these projects:

Continuing through Thursday

From 6 p.m. until 5 a.m. each night, two right lanes will be closed on northbound I-95 from the Newark toll plaza to the Route 896 overpass, with a third lane closing starting at 9 p.m., as crews remove bridge construction materials and paint structural steel. A lane will be dedicated for traffic coming off the ramp from southbound Route 896 to northbound I-95.

Starting tonight through Oct. 16

From 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. each day, lane closures will occur on northbound I-95 at the bridge over routes 1 and 7 in Christiana, as well as Exit 165A for routes 1 and 7 to northbound I-95, to allow for repairing the bridge deck. DelDOT says one lane will remain open at all times. Exit detour: Route 1/7 southbound to Exit 164B to Road A eastbound onto Route 1/7 northbound to I-95 northbound on-ramp.

Monday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 10

From 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., daily lane closures in both directions on U.S. 202 at the I-95 interchange to allow for removal and replacement of concrete, with later work requiring additional shutdowns:

6 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, until 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22

• Closure of southbound U.S. 202 from the ramp to southbound I-95 to Broom Street

Detour: Traffic on southbound U.S. 202 destined for points south will be directed to the ramp to southbound I-95, to Exit 7/Delaware Avenue to Jackson Street, turn left onto Ninth Street, turn left onto Adams Street, take the ramp to I-95 northbound, take the ramp to Exit 9/Marsh Road, turn left at the bottom of the ramp, turn right onto Marsh road, turn right onto Market Street (Philadelphia Pike) continue to U.S. 202 southbound.

• Closure of the ramp from southbound U.S. 202 to northbound I-95

Detour: Traffic on southbound U.S. 202 destined for I-95 northbound will be directed to the ramp from U.S. 202 southbound to I-95 southbound, to Exit 7/Delaware Avenue to Jackson Street, turn left onto Ninth Street, turn left onto Adams Street, and take the ramp to northbound I-95.

• Closure of the ramp at Exit 8/northbound I-95 to southbound U.S. 202

Detour: Traffic on northbound I-95 destined for southbound U.S. 202  will be directed to continue north on I-95, take the ramp to Exit 9/Marsh Road, turn left at the bottom of the ramp, turn right onto Marsh Road, turn right onto Philadelphia Pike (Market Street) continue to southbound U.S. 202.

• Closure of the ramp at Exit 8/southbound I-95  to southbound U.S. 202

Detour: Traffic destined for southbound U.S. 202  will be directed to take the ramp to northbound U.S. 202, take the Foulk Road exit, turn right onto Wilson Road, turn right onto Marsh Road, turn right onto Philadelphia Pike (Market Street) continue to southbound U.S. 202.

5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23 until 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2

• Closure of northbound U.S. 202 from Broom Street to the bridge over I-95, closure of the ramp from northbound U.S. 202 to northbound I-95 and closure of the ramp from northbound U.S. 202 to southbound I-95 (but northbound ramp will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26).

Detour: Traffic on Market Street (Philadelphia Pike) destined for points north on U.S. 202 or to northbound and southbound I-95 will be directed to continue on Market Street/Philadelphia Pike, turn left onto Marsh Road, take the ramp to northbound I-95, or take a left onto the ramp to southbound I-95 and take the Exit 8 ramp to northbound U.S. 202.

Detour: Traffic on Miller Road destined for points north on northbound U.S. 202 or to northbound and southbound I-95 will be directed to continue through the U.S. 202 intersection to Broom Street, turn left onto 18th Street, turn left onto Washington Street, turn right onto Miller Road, turn right onto Lea Boulevard, turn left onto Washington Street, turn left onto Marsh Road, take the ramp to northbound I-95, or turn left onto the ramp to southbound I-95 and take the Exit 8 ramp to northbound U.S. 202.

Detour: Traffic on Broom Street destined for points north on U.S. 202 or to northbound and southbound I-95 will be directed through the U.S. 202 intersection to Miller Road, turn right onto Lea Boulevard, turn left onto Washington Street, turn left onto Marsh Road, take the ramp to northbound I-95, or turn left onto the ramp to southbound I-95 and take the Exit 8 ramp to northbound U.S. 202.

Detour: Traffic on Washington Street destined for points north on U.S. 202 or to northbound and southbound I-95 will be directed to continue on Washington Street, turn right onto Miller Road, turn right onto Lea Boulevard, turn left onto Washington Street, turn left onto Marsh Road, take the ramp to northbound I-95, or turn left onto the ramp to southbound I-95 and take the Exit 8 ramp to northbound U.S. 202.

While the concrete removal and replacement is underway at the I-95/U.S. 202 interchange, DelDOT is encouraging through traffic to take Interstate 495 around Wilmington to avoid the construction delays.
