DELAWARE CITY, DELAWARE (8/25/2015) A container ship that ran aground in the Delaware River has been freed and is back moored at the Port of Salem, according to online shipping tracking websites.
The Coast Guard earlier today reported the 328-foot Bermuda Islander lost power and propulsion about 9 p.m. Monday and went aground opposite the entrance to the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, near the New Jersey shoreline.
The ship had left the Port of Salem, New Jersey, and was bound for Hamilton, Ontario, according to online shipping records.
There were 12 people aboard the Netherlands-flagged ship when it went aground. No injuries have been reported, the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard said it was overseeing salvage efforts, which were being handled by Donjon Marine.
“Our goal is to get the vessel safely back underway while mitigating pollution,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel Brown, an operations specialist in the Sector Delaware Bay command center in Philadelphia. “Although there haven’t been any reports of pollution, we are monitoring the situation closely to ensure it stays that way.”
