Police identify motorcyclist killed in crash near Odessa

ODESSA, DELAWARE (8/2/2015) Delaware State Police this morning identified a 33-year-old man killed in a motorcycle crash on U.S. 13 north of Odessa on Saturday.

The victim was Nicholas E. Russo of Warwick Maryland.

Police said Russo was driving a 2007 Honda CBR 1000 north in the left lane just north of Marl Pit Road about 7:40 p.m. with a group of other motorcycles.

As traffic crossed over Drawyers Creek, several of the motorcycles began passing between cars and Russo attempted to pass a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado on the narrow left shoulder.

The right side of his bike collided with the left side of the truck, police said, ejecting Russo from the motorcycle.

Russo then struck a guard rail. He was pronounced dead at the scene by New Castle County paramedics.

Police said he was wearing an approved helmet.

The driver of the truck, Michael P. Stradley, 31, of Newark, was properly restrained, police said, and was able to stop his truck on the right shoulder. He was not hurt.

Police said they are still investigating the crash but no charges are expected.

Odessa firefighters also responded to the scene.

Northbound U.S. 13 (DuPont Parkway) was closed about 5 hours at Route 299 as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
