House fire in Wilmington blamed on children with matches

Fire engineWILMINGTON, DELAWARE (8/1/2015) A house fire in Wilmington is being blamed on children playing with matches.

The fire happened about 6:30 p.m. Friday at 1506 W. Seventh St.

City firefighters found heavy smoke and flames on a rear deck, said Battalion Chief James R Jobes, and smoke inside the house.

The fire was contained to the deck area and doorway to the kitchen, he said. The fire was under control in 20 minutes.

An investigation determined two children, ages 9 and 3, were playing with matches under the deck where a baby mattress was stored that caught fire.

He said the children were referred to the Juvenile Fire Setter Program.

Damage to the home was estimated at $7,000.

About 22 fire and emergency medical personnel responded.  Battalion Chief Michael Schaal was commander at the scene.
