John T. McCool, former police chief, bank VP, dies at 81

REHOBOTH BEACH, DELAWARE (6/16/2017) John T. McCool, a former Wilmington police chief and New Castle County official, has died at age 81 in Rehoboth Beach.

McCool served as Wilmington chief in the 1960s and ’70s, and after retiring from that force became director of public safety for New Castle County in 1977 and later served as chief administrative officer for the county.

He also was director of the special investigations unit in the state Attorney General’s Office and a vice president of Citibank Delaware.

McCool died Sunday surrounded by family. He and his wife had retired to Rehoboth 14 years ago.

McCool is survived by his wife of 57 years, Claudette; his children, Mark, Gary, Carol and Janet McCool; his grandchildren, Samantha, John and Garrett McCool and Thomas Feher; and his sister, Janet Davidson. He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Chief.

A viewing will be held at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in Silverbrook Cemetery.
