Street closures, shuttle service planned for Beau Biden services

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (6/4/2015) Numerous street closures are planned Friday and Saturday in Wilmington as well as special shuttle-bus service to accommodate the viewing and funeral for former Attorney General Beau Biden, authorities said today.

The public viewing for Biden will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 901 N. DuPont St., on Friday, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

A Mass for Biden will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

City police warned that motorcade movements throughout the funeral services will cause temporary closures in the area of St. Anthony of Padua Church. Delays also are expected in surrounding areas of the city.

The following streets are closed to traffic from 6 a.m. Friday through 2 p.m. Saturday:

  • Lincoln Street from 8th Street to Pennsylvania Avenue
  • DuPont Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to Howland Street
  • 10th Street from Clayton Street to Union Street
  • Howland Street from DuPont Street to Lincoln Street
  • Scott Street from 8th Street to 11th Street

Parking is banned on these streets from 6 a.m. Friday through 2 p.m. Saturday:

  • Union Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to 9th Street
  • Lincoln Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to 9th Street
  • Scott Street from Howland Street to 10th Street
  • DuPont Street from Howland to Pennsylvania Avenue
  • 9th Street from Union Street to DuPont Street

St. Francis Hospital is offering free parking Saturday in its garage at W. Seventh and N. DuPont streets for area residents affected by the parking restrictions.

 

 

DART’s local bus service in Wilmington will be on detour both days. Customers can go to DART First State or call 800-652-DART (3278) for additional information.

A free shuttle service will be offered by DART for those wishing to pay their respects. Buses will depart from Salesianum High School, 1801 N. Broom St. in Wilmington. On Friday, buses will begin transporting passengers from 10:30 a.m. until about 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, buses will transport passengers from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Those using the public transportation from Salesianum are encouraged to leave baggage in their personal vehicles as there will be security checks entering the church. All attendees will go through airport-like security and should bring as few personal items as possible. No bags, backpacks, sharp objects, umbrellas, liquid or signs will be allowed.

Buses can accommodate wheel chairs and other mobility devices.
