DOVER, DELAWARE (6/4/2015) Street closures are planned in Dover and Wilmington today as the body of former Attorney General Beau Biden lies in state at Legislative Hall for a public viewing.
Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden, died Saturday at age 46.
A processional from noon to 1 p.m. will start in Wilmington and end at Legislative Hall, causing brief closures along the route. Wilmington police said brief closures will happen around noon for several intersections encompassing the North Market Street and King Street corridors to allow passage of the motorcade.
The service is planned from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., and DelDOT announced the following will be closed starting at 11:30 a.m.:
- Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at the Family Court building intersection
- Federal Street from East Water Street to North Street
- Federal Street from North Street to Loockerman Street
- Legislative Avenue from East Water Street to Loockerman Street
- Duke of York Street from Legislative Avenue to Federal Street
- William Penn Street from Federal Street to Legislative Avenue
DART’s local bus service around Legislative Hall and the Route 301 will be on detour for the entire day. Customers can go to DART First State or call 800-652-DART (3278) for additional information.
A free shuttle service will be offered by DART for those wishing to pay respects at Legislative Hall. Buses will pick up passengers at the south end of the Blue Hen Corporate Center on the Bay Road side. Buses will begin transporting passengers from the Blue Hen Corporate Center to Legislative Hall at 12:30 p.m. until about 5 p.m.
DelDOT urged people to use the shuttle since parking will be limited and roads closed around Legislative Hall.
Those using the public transportation from the Blue Hen Mall are encouraged to leave baggage in their personal vehicles as there will be security checks entering Legislative Hall, DelDOT said. All attendees will go through airport-like security and should bring as few personal items as possible. No bags, backpacks, sharp objects, umbrellas, liquid, or signs will be allowed.
The buses can accommodate wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
