LITTLE HEAVEN, DELAWARE (4/28/2015) A gunshot fired at a resident missed but struck an automobile Monday night during a home invasion in the Barkers Landing community that sent a man to a hospital, Delaware State Police said this morning.
The incident happened just after 9 p.m. in the 100 block of Jury Drive as the 37-year-old resident was returning home and attempting to open the door.
A man with a handgun approached from behind and removed cash from his pockets, then struck him in the back of the head with the gun, causing him to fall to the ground, police said.
The gunman used the victim’s keys but was unable to find the right one to open the door.
As he tried, a 25-year-old man and 15-year-old boy inside fled through a rear window.
The 37-year-old man got up and started running when the gunman fired one round toward him but only hit a vehicle in the driveway.
The gunman then fled on foot. Police said he was black and wearing a red sweatshirt and blue jeans.
The 37-year-old was taken by ambulance to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, treated for an injury to the back of the head and released.
Police said their investigation found this wasn’t a random act and the victim may have been targeted.
They asked anyone with information to call Detective W. Miller at 302-741-2807.
