UPDATE: More details on three bank robberies, search for robber
MILFORD, DELAWARE (4/7/2015) Milford police have confirmed the identify of a man who apparently committed suicide during a pursuit by state troopers on Friday following three bank robberies in two states.
David Tyre, 35, of Harrington, had earlier been identified by Milford police as a suspect in a PNC Bank robbery on Thursday.
On Friday, a car believed to be the getaway vehicle in the bank robbery was pursued by troopers from Bethel to near Bridgeville, where it stopped after running over spiked strips placed on the roadway by police.
A single gunshot was heard from the car, and state police said a 35-year-old man was found dead and they were investigating the death as a suicide, but his name was not released.
On Monday, Milford Detective Dwight Young confirmed to Delaware Free News that Tyre was the man found dead in the car.
Tyre also was a suspect in armed bank robberies at a PNC Bank branch in Denton, Maryland, on Thursday and on March 25.
The suspect in those robberies was initially described in Denton police reports as African-American, but Milford police described the robber as possibly white.
Denton police said the Thursday robbery happened at 3:30 p.m., about 40 minutes before the one in Milford.
The Denton robber displayed a small semi-automatic handgun but fled without getting any cash when he was surprised by a uniformed security guard, police said. Police reported he fled in a maroon or lighter color passenger car possibly a 1999 or newer Chevrolet Impala with left-side body damage and a missing hubcap or spare tire on the right front, driven by a white female with long blonde or dirty blonde hair.
Denton police said they received an anonymous tip that led to identifying Tyre as a possible suspect in the robbery on Friday, and telephone contact was made with him. He was believed to be in the area of Liden School Road along the state line west of Greenwood, but a search by Denton, the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police failed to locate him.
Delaware State Police reported the Impala was spotted when it turned off Hickman Road (Route 16) onto Liden School Road but the trooper lost sight of it Friday. It was spotted again later in Bethel, where the pursuit began that ended on Seashore Highway (Route 18) east of Bridgeville, with the death of Tyre.
