21-year-old man struck, killed on U.S. 9 near Lewes

DSP logoLEWES, DELAWARE (3/14/2015) A 21-year-old man walking across U.S. 9 near Lewes was struck and killed early today, state police said.

The accident happened about 12:45 a.m. on the road, also known as Lewes-Georgetown Highway, just east of Nassau Commons Boulevard.

Isidro Bautista-Rosales, of Pittsville, Maryland, was pronounced dead at Beebe Healthcare’s hospital in Lewes, where he was taken by ambulance.

Police said he had left his vehicle parked on the westbound shoulder and for unknown reasons began walking across the roadway.

He was then struck in the eastbound lane by a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Nicholas J. Lank, 34, of Harbeson.

Bautista-Rosales landed on the eastbound shoulder. The car was able to come to a controlled stop.

Lank, wearing a seat belt, was not injured, police said.

The accident is still under investigation but police said alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors. No charges have been filed.

U.S. 9 was closed about 2½ hours as police investigated.
