54-year-old man dies as pickup hits home, catches fire

CHESWOLD, DELAWARE (2/4/2015) A 54-year-old man died early today when his pickup truck crashed into a utility pole and a house southwest of Cheswold, trapping him inside as the vehicle and building caught fire, state police said.

The accident happened about 2:30 a.m. on Pearsons Corner Road a third of a mile north of Dinahs Corner Road.

Police said Wilson E. Seeney, of Dover, was driving his 1996 Chevrolet Silverado at high speed as he attempted to negotiate a left curve.

The right tires went off the edge of the road, causing the vehicle to spin around, cross both lanes and hit a group of mailboxes on the east side before hitting the pole and house at 4880 Pearsons Corner Road.

Cheswold firefighters arrived to extinguish the flames.

Seeney was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers.

Two adult residents in the home were not injured.

The road was closed about 3 hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.
