Man charged with forcing woman into car before Dover crash

DOVER, DELAWARE (1/29/2015) A 51-year-old man was charged with forcing a woman into a car that later crashed through a fence in Dover while he  was driving, city police said.

The Volkswagen Passat crashed into a backyard about 1:40 a.m. today in the 600 block of N. Governors Ave.

Police said the driver, Matthew Stanford, had been going 80 mph and lost control of the car after driving recklessly and refusing to let the woman out.

He fled on foot but was later captured after a brief chase in the 300 block of Division St.

The 29-year-old woman who was an acquaintance of Stanford was treated at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital for severe facial cuts, police said.

Stanford was charged with unlawful imprisonment, reckless endangering, vehicular assault, reckless driving, resisting arrest and traffic violations. He was released on $3,900 unsecured bond.
