Newark man, 37, struck on Kirkwood Highway in critical condition

UPDATED STORY

STANTON, DELAWARE (1/20/2015) A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and thrown to the ground in the 3700 block of Kirkwood Highyway late Tuesday, according to state police said.

The accident happened about 10:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes in front of the McCrery & Hanna Funeral Home, just west of Duncan Road.

The victim was a 37-year-old Newark man who was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in critical condition. His name has not been released.

State police said he was wearing dark clothing, was not carrying a light and was not crossing in a designated crosswalk when he was struck by an eastbound 2008 Toyota Prius.

The driver of the car, Redmond L. Clevenger Jr., 46, of Wallingford, Pennsylvania, was not injured.

The eastbound lanes were closed at Loraine Avenue while emergency responders dealt with the accident.

Police said they are still investigating.

 

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a serious crash in which a pedestrian was struck on Kirkwood Highway west of the Duncan Road intersection late last night.
The Preliminary investigation has determined that the crash occurred on January 20, 2015 at approximately 10:16 p.m., as a 37 year old pedestrian from Newark crossed Kirkwood Highway west of the Duncan Road intersection directly into the path of an eastbound 2008 Toyota Prius operated by Redmond L. Clevenger Jr., 46 year old male of Wallingford, Pennsylvania. The front of the vehicle struck the pedestrian in the right lane. After the impact the pedestrian was thrown to the ground and the vehicle came to a controlled stop in the right lane. The pedestrian was transported and admitted to Christiana Hospital in critical condition.
Redmond L. Clevenger Jr., was properly restrained and uninjured in the crash.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this crash. Kirkwood Highway eastbound was limited to one lane for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
The pedestrian was wearing all dark clothing, not carrying a light, and was not crossing in a designated crosswalk.
