22-year-old man killed in I-95 crash identified

NEWARK, DELAWARE (1/11/2015) A 22-year-old man was killed early today when his car went off I-95, overturned and became entangled in the pole of a large highway sign, authorities said.

State police have identified the victim as Rashaan D. Monroe of Newark.

The accident happened just before 3 a.m. a quarter mile north of the South Chapel Street (Route 72) overpass.

Police said Monroe was southbound in a 2005 Ford 500 at an apparent high speed when it went off the west side in a grassy area, rolled onto the passenger side and struck the concrete foundation and steel structure supporting overhead signs for the Route 896 exit.

Sgt. Michael McColley of New Castle County paramedics said the man killed was extensively trapped in the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene.

State police said Monroe was not wearing a seat belt.

Southbound I-95 was restricted to one left lane for four and a half hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.

Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company of Newark responded to the crash.
