Nuclear emergency siren tests underway in Delaware

The Salem/Hope Creek nuclear power plants, in Lower Allowsays Township, New Jersey, are seen from the boat ramp at Port Penn along the Delaware River.

DELAWARE (1/6/2015) Siren testing is underway this morning for the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Station, Delaware emergency officials say.

The quarterly test, scheduled to end at 11:30 a.m., includes 37 sirens within 10 miles of the nuclear plant, located in New Jersey across the Delaware River from Port Penn.

Sirens are positioned in Kent and New Castle counties in Delaware.

The sirens would be used to alert the public in event of an actual emergency at the nuclear plants, said Gary Laing, spokesman for the Delaware Emergency Mangement Agency. DEMA conducts the tests along with Delaware State Police.

In such an emergency, the public would be alerted to tune to local radio stations for more information.
