UPDATE: Wind chill to plunge to 10 below zero after 50 mph gusts
DELAWARE (1/5/2015) With 2 inches of snow on the ground in parts of northern Delaware, numerous crashes on slick roadways and snow tapering off this afternoon, Delawareans now can brace for bitter cold in the coming nights.
At 2:20 p.m., a crash closed southbound I-495 at Edgemoor. The highway has since been reopened.
The temperature is expected to drop into the teens tonight in northern Delaware, with a wind chill of minus 3 by early Thursday. Temperatures downstate will be only slightly warmer, according to the National Weather Service.
At noon today, forecasters predicted final snow totals would be between 1 to 3 inches, with the highest totals on the Delmarva Peninsula and in Cape May County, New Jersey.
The Delaware Environmental Observing System reported 2 inches of snow fell in Claymont, 1.8 in Hockessin, 1.6 in Greenville and Prices Corner, 1.2 in New Castle and Port Penn, 1.1 in Newark and Dover, 0.7 in Frederica, 0.4 in Lewes, a trace inBridgeville, and none in Bethany Beach, Seaford, Millsboro and Laurel as of 4:20 p.m.
DelDOT early this morning reduced the speed limit on I-495 to 55 mph. DelDOT reported delays due to the weather on northbound Route 1 approaching I-95, but traffic on other major highways mostly moved smoothly though at a pace slower than normal in the early commute but with numerous accident reports from across the area through the morning.
Moderate snow and reduced visibility was reported on the Delaware Memorial Bridge, where the speed limit was reduced to 35 mph at 9 a.m..
“Please don’t crowd the plow and use caution,” said James Salmon, spokesman for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, which operates the bridge, on Twitter.
