Woman struck while pushing out-of-gas car on Route 273

CHRISTIANA, DELAWARE (12/23/2014) A 52-year-old Newark woman was seriously injured when she was struck by a car when she was pushing her vehicle, which had run out of gas, while her teenage daughter steered the car, state police reported Monday night.

The accident happened about 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the left westbound lane of Christiana Road (Route 273) just west of Old Baltimore Pike.

As Veronica L. Jones was pushing her 2011 Hyandai Accent, police said, she was struck by a westbound 2014 Toyota Corolla, vaulted onto the hood of that car and then thrown into the grass median.

The driver of the Corolla, Ariel Torres, 33, of Dover, was able to bring his car to a controlled stop. He was not injured.

Jones was admitted to Christiana Hospital.

Michelle L. Jones, 17, of Newark, who was at the wheel of the Hyundai as it was being pushed, was not injured, police said.

Troopers are still investigating the crash.
