Maryland man dies in crash near Selbyville

SELBYVILLE, DELAWARE (11/25/2012) A 30-year-old Maryland man was killed and a passenger seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash today west of Selbyville, state police say.

The man killed was identified as Daniel A. Vargas of Salisbury. His passenger , Enrique Castillo-Muniz, 25, also of Salisbury, was flown by police helicopter to Christiana Hospital.

The accident happened about 8 a.m. on Cypress Road (State Route 54) about 2 miles west of Cliff Road.

Vargas was eastbound at apparent high speed when the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder he was driving began spinning on a sharp curve, police said.

The SUV started to overturn on the driver’s side and struck a tree on the south side of the road.

Vargas was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say speed and wet roadway may have contributed to the crash. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Cypress Road was closed about 3 hours as police investigated.
