STANTON, DELAWARE (12/12/2014) State police today identified the victim in the state’s third pedestrian fatality in two days.

Brian M. Dougherty, 32, of Wilmington, was trying to cross the eastbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway west of the Duncan Road intersection, near the Bull’s Eye restaurant, about 8:50 p.m. Thursday. He was southbound when he was struck by the left front of a 2002 Buick Century. Police said he was not in a crosswalk.

Dougherty was thrown onto the hood and into the windshield of the car and then into the roadway, police said. He was then struck by a 2006 Honda Accord that was in the right eastbound lane of the highway.

Dougherty was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Honda, Kathleen Houghton, 64, of Wilmington, was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Robert Jenkins, 25, of Bear, the driver of the Buick, was not injured.

The road was closed more than two hours as police investigated.

The crash remains under investigation, but police said they do not expect to file charges.

In the wake of the latest pedestrian tragedy, police urged that pedestrians use caution when crossing roadways at night, use crosswalks, carry a flashlight and wear bright or light-colored clothing.
