NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DELAWARE (4/7/2015) A reassessment of real estate values for tax purposes is being proposed for New Castle County, which hasn’t had one for more than 30 years.
County Councilman George Smiley says he will propose an ordinance calling for the reassessment at the April 14 council meeting.
Under the proposal to be voted on April 28, the reassessment of property at its true market value as of July 1, 2015, would be completed by tax time in 2017.
The county’s last such reassessment was in 1983.
“I believe that the continued reliance upon such outdated information supports a growing disparity between the current assessed value being utilized to determine county and school taxes and 2015 real property values,” Smiley said in a news release. “The New Castle County property owners that I have spoken with continually tell me that they would feel better about the taxes they pay if everyone in the county was paying their fair share based upon the proper property value.”
