DELAWARE (2/2/2015) Some schools are canceling after-school activities today due to predicted icy conditions as temperatures plunge after a day of heavy rain across the state.
In addition to being icy, the National Weather Service says winds may gust to 50 mph across the state.
The Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christina, Colonial and Red Clay districts announced cancellation of after-school and evening activities.
The storm dumped less than an inch of snow in northern Delaware overnight and as of noon the daytime rainfall had produced more than half an inch of precipitation.
The weather service issued a wind advisory in effect from 1 p.m. until midnight. Sustained northwest winds of 20-30 mph are predicted.
The winds could make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles and cause scattered tree and power line damage, the service said.
The Delaware Environmental Observing System reports 0.8 inch of snow measured overnight in Hockessin, with smaller amounts elsewhere. Heavier snow fell north of Delaware, with as much as 6.8 inches in the Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania as of 4 a.m., according to the weather service.
The temperature tonight is expected to drop into the low teens upstate and the high teens downstate.
Sunny skies are expected Tuesday with a high temperature in the 20s.
