Fire heavily damages Harbor House apartments building in Claymont

CLAYMONT, DELAWARE 12/14/2015 A fire early today heavily damaged an occupied building at the Harbor House apartment complex in Claymont, displacing about 20 people, authorities said.

The fire was reported shortly before 2 a.m. at 31 Harbor Drive, said Michael G. Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

He said smoke was pouring from the three-story building when Claymont Fire Company arrived.

The building contained 12 units with nine rented and three used by management. The fire was contained to the rental office on the ground floor, Chionchio said.

Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started.

Damage was estimated at $50,000.

No injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross was assisting the displaced residents.
