NEWARK, DELAWARE (8/5/2015) A 1-year-old boy found floating in water on the cover of an in-ground backyard pool remains in critical condition this evening, Delaware State Police said.

The incident happened about 8:30 a.m. in the 900 block of Capitol Trail (Route 2) in the Delaplane Manor neighborhood east of Newark.

The child was without a pulse and not breathing when paramedics arrived, said Cpl. Abigail Haas of New Castle County emergency medical services.

She said the child was in extremely critical condition when taken to Christiana Hospital in Stanton.

Police said he was later transferred to Nemours/A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children.

The boy was seen by a neighbor laying in about 18 inches of water atop the pool cover, police said.

The neighbor went to the home immediately and alerted a 16-year-old and a 13-year-old who were caring for the boy. They found the boy unresponsive and called 911.
