2 Newark men die in Route 1 crash

Two young Newark men died in the crash of a 2013 Cadillac CTS on Route 1 near Red Lion. (Photo: Delaware Free News)RED LION, DELAWARE (11/20/2018) Two young Newark men died Monday night in the crash of a 2013 Cadillac CTS on Route 1 east of Red Lion, the Delaware State Police  said.

The crash was reported at 7:27 p.m. about 1.5 miles north of Route 72 (Wrangle Hill Road).

The driver of the northbound car, identified as Miles W. Hunt, 28, of Newark, lost control at high speed and struck a guard rail in the median. The Cadillac went airborne, police said, and struck the support beam of an overhead road sign, splitting the vehicle in half.

The rear part of the car went into the southbound lanes, and along with other debris caused disabling damage to two southbound cars.

Hunt and his passenger, 25-year-old James P. Warrington 2nd, of Newark, were pronounced dead at the scene.

No injuries were reported in the two southbound vehicles, a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse driven by a 57-year-old New Castle woman and a 2019 Subaru XV Cross, driven by a 23-year-old Middletown woman.

Both directions of Route 1 were closed intermittently until 12:35 a.m. while police investigated.

Police said they are still investigating the crash and asked anyone with information to call Sgt. D. Alexander of the at 302-365-8484.
