NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (7/14/2018) A 33-year-old Pennsylvania man survived a rollover crash on Interstate 495 near New Castle this morning but then was killed as he was talking on a cellphone and was struck by a hit-and-run driver, Delaware State Police said.
The crash was reported at 4:17 a.m. at the ramp onto northbound I-295.
Police said the man killed was southbound driving a 2000 Toyota Avalon when the left front corner of the car struck a Jersey barrier. The car then swerved across the travel lane and spun around, entering a grassy area, flipping and striking a tree. The vehicle came to rest back on its wheels on the grass.
Police said the driver got out of the car and walked back into the travel lane while making a phone call. He was then struck by a small sports car, dark in color and possibly a Honda Civic, police said. The car did not stop and continued south on the ramp.
The man talking on the phone was declared dead at the scene. His name was withheld by police pending notification of next of kin.
Two adult passengers in the Toyota were taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton for treatment of injuries that police described as minor. All three in the Toyota had been wearing weat belts, police said.
The ramp was closed about three hours as police investigated.
