The blaze that affected at least three units in the 1200 block of Melontree Court happened when charcoal briquettes used in a grill ignited the rear vinyl siding on the town house, said Michael G. Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

He said when Claymont Fire Company arrived shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday, flames were visible on the exterior of the two-story town houses.

He said damage was estimated at $250,000.

The American Red Cross and apartment management are providing emergency assistance to the displaced residents.

No injuries were reported.
