GEORGETOWN, DELAWARE (8/9/2017) A customer removing a part from a vehicle was killed Tuesday when the vehicle slipped off a jack at Donovan Salvage Works north of Georgetown, the Delaware State Police said.
The incident happened about 1 p.m. at 20262 Donovans Road.
The 41-year-old man from Salisbury, Maryland, had used a jack to raise the vehicle and placed a spare tire underneath as a buffer, police said.
When police and emergency medical crews arrived, the man was laying on the ground near the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the car, on dirt and gravel, became dislodged from the jack and landed on top of the man.
Witnesses alerted the salvage yard staff and a fork lift was used to lift the vehicle off the man before rescue crews arrived.
The man, whose name was withheld by police pending notification of next of kin, was working alone and police didn’t know how long he may have been trapped.
An autopsy is planned but police said no foul play is suspected.
