Major backup on southbound Route 1 after crash near Townsend

TOWNSEND, DELAWARE (6/30/2016) A multi-vehicle crash with several injuries closed southbound Route 1 near Townsend for nearly an hour and caused a major backup this afternoon.

The crash, reported by at 12:22 p.m., was south of the New Discovery Road emergency access and a U.S. 13 crossover south of Odessa.

Emergency crews were on the scene. The vehicles involved were on the left shoulder.

Traffic cameras showed southbound traffic at a standstill beginning near the Route 299 Odessa/Middletown exit at 1:05 p.m..

At 1:10 p.m. one lane was getting by the wreck on the right, and DelDOT said all lanes were open at 1:17 p.m. but continuing delays were expected until the backlog clears.

Townsend firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

The crash is under investigation by Delaware State Police.
