WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (6/27/2016) Three people were taken to a hospital after a four-car crash that closed southbound Interstate 95 south of Wilmington for two hours this afternoon, authorities said.
The crash was reported at 12:38 p.m. south of the Maryland Avenue exit.
Five Points Fire Company was called to the scene.
Delaware State Police gave this account of the crash:
Scott Masotti, 25, of Tannersville, Pennsylvania, was driving a 2016 Nissan Sentra in the right lane. As he saw traffic slowing in front of him, he moved into the center lane where traffic was also slowing.
Masotti then attempted to enter the left lane, but the front of his car struck the rear of a 2004 Honda Civic which was slowing in the center lane, and which was driven by Rosario Velazquez-Flores, 18, of Wilmington.
The Honda then spun and struck the side of Masotti’s vehicle before leaving the left side of the road, striking a guardrail and coming to a stop.
The Sentra spun and struck the rear of a 2013 Buick Verano which was stopped in the center lane, and which was driven by Nancy B. Senior, 74, of Wilmington.
The Sentra then struck the rear of a 2008 Ford Fusion which was also stopped in the center lane and which was driven by Eric Petka, 31, of Wilmington.
The Nissan then came to a stop in the roadway. Senior and Petka were able to bring their cars to a stop in the left lane just south of the collision.
Velazquez-Flores, Senior, and a 68-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Buick, were all treated at the scene by New Castle County paramedics, then taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton.
Petka and Masotti were not injured, police said.
Masotti was cited by troopers with reckless driving, inattentive driving, inappropriate speed, and making an improper lane change.
