69 treated after prison boiler leaks carbon monoxide

DOVER, DELAWARE (6/21/2016) A boiler malfunction atĀ Morris Community Corrections Center led to a carbon monoxide leak today that sent 69 people to local hospitals, authorities said.

The boiler has been shut down and a mechanical contractor is making repairs. An engineering firm is due at the prison at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to assess the boiler room area.

Of those taken to Bayhealth hospitals in Dover and Milford with symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure, 68 were inmates and one was a Department of Correction employee.

Two inmates and one guard will be admitted for further treatment. Many inmates already have been returned to the prison, authorities said.

Dover Fire Department also responded.

Morris is a 150-bed facility at 300 Water St. that housesĀ substance abuse treatment and work release offenders.
