MILFORD, DELAWARE (6/7/2016) A 35-year-old Smyrna woman has been charged with stealing more than $8,800 from tenants moving into a Milford apartment complex where she was employed, Milford police said Monday.

The thefts happened from May to December of last year, Sgt. Dwight Young said.

Tashana E. Smith was arrested May 24 and charged with felony theft of $1,500 or greater, four counts of second-degree forgery and falsifying business records.

Young said Smith was employed by the management office of the Cascades Apartments off Airport Road.

She told tenants to provide her with blank money orders for rent and that she would fill them out for them, Young said.

“Smith would take the money orders, make them out to herself, cash them and keep the money,” Young said.

He said Smith also told new tenants to pay her with cash only for the first month’s rent and security deposit, then would keep the cash.

Smith was released on $11,000 unsecured bond.
