ELK MILLS, MARYLAND (12/6/2015) Firefighters from Delaware and Maryland battled a blaze that destroyed the Baldwin United Methodist Church in Elk Mills early today.
The fire was reported at 4:30 a.m., bringing firefighters from Singerly, Cecilton and North East fire companies as well as Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company from Newark in Delaware.
The church is located in the 700 block of Elk Mills Road, just 2 miles west of the state line.
The Singerly Fire Company invited the burned-out congregation to hold services today at its fire hall, noting that church members had served dinner for firefighters at an annual awards banquet numerous times over the years.
The Maryland state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the blaze.
Firefighters from Chesapeake City, Charlestown, Community Fire Company of Rising Sun, Water Witch and Perryville, as well as Oxford, Pennsylvania, also assisted at the scene and covering other fire stations.
