WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (11/12/2015) A 30-year-old woman was struck and killed while walking along Interstate 495 south of Wilmington early today, according to Delaware State Police.
The accident happened about 1:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes just before the junction with Interstates 295 and 95.
The victim was identified as Kawana S. Perry of Colora, Maryland.
Police said she was a passenger in a vehicle her husband was driving when she got out for undetermined reasons and began walking.
She was struck by the left front corner of a southbound 2010 Hyundai Elantra in the left lane and thrown onto the left shoulder of the highway, police said.
Perry was taken to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, where she was pronounced dead.
Alcohol may have been a factor on the part of Perry, police said.
The driver of the Hyunda, identified as John A. Hutt, 22, of Pennsville, New Jersey, was not injured. Police said he was wearing a seat belt.
He stopped his car at the scene.
Police are still investigating the crash.
Minquadale and Holloway Terrace firefighters responded.
