ELLENDALE, DELAWARE (11/8/2015) A Seaford woman died Saturday night when her minivan, with the headlights off, collided with a car and was then struck by two other vehicles in a wrong-way crash on U.S. 113, Delaware State Police said this morning. Three people were injured, including a subsequent crash involving two additional vehicles.
The initial accident happened about 9 p.m. at the Robbins Road intersection, between Ellendale and Georgetown.
The woman killed was identified as Cheryl A. Green, 56. Police said she was not wearing a seat belt.
Green was driving a 1993 Mercury Villager minivan southbound in the northbound lanes just south of the intersection when she collided with a northbound 2001 Volkswagen Passat driven by Tristin F. Lowe, 49, of Pennsylvania.
The minivan spun around and came to rest in the roadway. The Passat stopped in the median.
A short time later, a northbound 2012 Audi Q7 SUV pulling a trailer struck the right side of the minivan in the right lane. The impact pushed the minivan into the median and the Audi stopped partially in the roadway.
Lowe was taken by ambulance to Milford Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries and released, police said.
The driver of the Audi, Peter E. Gray, 68, of Massachusetts, was taken by ambulance to Beebe Healthcare’s hospital in Lewes, where he was treated and released.
Lowe and Gray were wearing seat belts, police said.
As traffic on the highway slowed in the area, a separate crash involving two cars occurred in the southbound lanes.
A 1998 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Rory B. Monroe, 49, of Frankford, was rear-ended by a 2010 Cadillac DTS driven by William C. Townsend, 72, of Georgetown.
Monroe and his passenger, Cheryl Monroe, 48, of Frankford, were both wearing seat belts, police said. He was taken by ambulance to Beebe Healthcare, treated and released. She was uninjured.
Townsend and his passenger, Mary E. Terrell, 82, of Millsboro, were wearing seat belts and were not hurt, police said.
Southbound U.S. 113 (DuPont Boulevard) was closed about three hours, and northbound lanes were closed about four hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
